Ready to Ink Pink Slip

Mayor Mack is preparing to slash the city's workforce. Escalating his battle with the department leadership, Mack's planning for layoffs must begin immediately because the self serving department's have not agreed to concessions. Their plan consist of getting rid of the lowest paid and as such, massive personnel have to get selected for the pink slip process. Some unfortunate people who don't deserve it are going to get laid off, and it's not fair to them, but that's the only way to balance the budget. The Mayor indicated that many would be laid off, but more of a public concern 111 police officers. According to the politics at city hall, the city of Trenton has lost over 40 million dollars in state aid, and unfortunately they have said that everybody has to make a sacrifice. Department leaders have been irresponsible during this process. They rather see the lowest paid workforce get the pink slip than make personal sacrifices. 111 officers is entirely too many officers to be without, especially in a city such as Trenton. I am afraid of walking the streets now, imagine come the next couple of months when it takes place. Rather than getting rid of 111 officers, department leaders have refused to consider retirements for those who have the time to retire. It is public knowledge that officers get a yearly clothing allowance, longevity pay, specialy pay and overtime pay on top of their base salary. Rather than putting these perks on the table for negotiations, including the option of giving up vacation time and taking furlough days, they rather keep these lucrative incentives at the cost of 111 officers. If the city department leaders were really interested in saving jobs, then personal sacrifices should be put on the table today. Would they do this? I think there's no way the elders would go for this. There claim of fame is, I earned it, Im keeping it. Well, the young workforce also earned their right to be city employees but because they are at the bottom, they are the first to suffer when talks about cuts are made. The department leadership really need to step up and do the right thing. Please save these officers. We are at a time when we need all these cops protecting us. Govenrment mistakes should not be ours.

I am one of the 111 that is looking at a lay off, and I feel that furlough days, giving up vacation time, giving back clothing allowance and overtime is BS. I would hope that the other 110 people looking at layoffs would feel the same way. Eventually I will get my job back and I want all of the contractual stuff that I have now, there when I get back. I will gladly get laid off knowing that all the "negotiated to" and "agreed to" items of our contract remain intact. Peace out.

You're right though, the people who have the time that can retire, should. However, I don't think that the department should force anyone out of their jobs for retirement. Maybe some of those who are eligible to go, can't because they have children in college or still have high mortgages to pay for. They been here for 25, 30, hell even 40 years. They put the time in so they have the right to keep their jobs. There are some officers who don't have all that, so yeah, they need to go
